Ting’s advice is to not look at what everyone else is doing. Experiment. Take risks. Never stop shooting.
is often compared to figure skating; the cars all follow the same choreography, aim to take the same lines, and are judged on style. For event photographers, it can be challenging because there are only a handful of places you're allowed to stand, which means everyone's photos, despite being high quality, can tend to look similar to everyone else's.But not Ting's.
On a more personal level, one particular obstacle Ting said she's faced is being discredited when it comes to opportunities or jobs she lands because she's a woman."This is a trend I've seen happen to others, as well," Ting explained. She hears comments like,"They were hired because they're a woman," as if the person didn't earn it based on their merit or work.
But Ting holds to her belief that you shouldn't copy what everyone else is doing. She says she personally gets inspiration from watching TV shows and movies and seeing how things that are"I know a lot of people, when they're first starting out, [they'll] tell me, 'I want to shoot like this person,'" Ting said."And it's like … you want to find your own personal style.
