Full supermoons are 16% brighter than other full moons and may appear larger. That is because of their position in the sky.
A full moon occurs when the Earth is positioned between the moon and the sun. The moon gets is “super” prefix if it reaches its peak less than 10 hours after its orbit became closest to the Earth. The term “supermoon” was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979, NASA said.
