The reason that Brotherly Love’s twist ending is so surprising is that the movie posits June as something of a troubled antihero. While it is clear that June is a dangerous figure who is capable of serious violence, it would be tough for viewers to guess that he set the events of the movie in motion by killing five boys before its story began. Chris’s vengeance on June is arguably justified, but June’s relationships with his twin siblings and his mother proved that he could be kind and caring.
Does Chris Know That Jackie’s Daughter Is His Child? As if Brotherly Love’s ending wasn’t already dark enough, the movie’s plot twisted the knife when the final scene jumped ahead two years. While Sergio was a successful NBA player, Jackie was a single mother living in her brother’s house. She had a daughter who viewers could reasonably surmise was Chris’ child, but Chris knew nothing about this.
Chris was justified in shooting June since June himself had killed Omar, snuffing out the promising light of another person’s life before their time. However, Chris’s single-minded pursuit of vengeance destroyed his future with Jackie, condemning him to life in prison as June was buried. Ultimately, Chris’s prison term was arguably as ruinous as June’s death since it also deprived Jackie’s daughter of her father and Jackie of a shot at happiness.
