“The 25th anniversary of the Broncos’ first Super Bowl championship is a special occasion deserving of a tribute that celebrates how much the 1997 team means to our organization and fans,” president/CEO Joe Ellis said in a statement. “During an unforgettable season, that iconic team overcame tremendous adversity to deliver a long-awaited World Championship to our fans as double-digit underdogs in Super Bowl XXXII.
The Broncos will not induct a new member into the team’s Ring of Fame this year for only the third time since 2012. The 1997 team is represented in the Ring of Fame by coach Mike Shanahan, quarterback John Elway, offensive tackle Gary Zimmerman, safety Steve Atwater, tight end Shannon Sharpe, receiver Rod Smith, center Tom Nalen and kicker Jason Elam.A season after being upset by Jacksonville in the AFC Divisional playoff round, the ’97 Broncos started the season 6-0 and 9-1 and finished 12-4, a game behind Kansas City in the AFC West.
After beating the Jaguars 42-17 in the wild card round, the Broncos won at Kansas City and at Pittsburgh before upsetting Green Bay 31-24 in the Super Bowl as an 11-point underdog.
