The WNBA star has once reportedly vowed to never stand for the anthem. Here's how she handled that in her return.
“You have a right to be able to speak out, to challenge, and do all these things. what I went through, it just means a little bit more to me now. I was literally in a cage and could not stand the way I wanted to … and a lot of other situations. Just being able to hear my national anthem, see my flag, I definitely wanted to stand.”
The fact that the star center stood should not have been a surprise. She talked glowingly about hearing the anthem following the team’s first preseason game.“It’s like when you go to the Olympics, you’re sitting there, about to get gold put on your neck, the flags are going up, and the anthem is playing. It just hits different.Griner scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds in her return but her Phoenix Mercury lost to the Los Angeles Sparks, 94-71.
