Singer and guitarist Billy Strings built his reputation on his magnetic live act, but his career skyrocketed when he started streaming performances from home during the pandemic

Billy Strings, 30, is one of the fastest-rising touring acts in American music. After starting out in Traverse City, Mich., in 2012, he headed to Nashville and began to generate buzz for his singing and his guitar playing, which is both technically staggering and deeply emotional, a rare combination. Mr. Strings’s love of high-flying, risk-taking improvisation has endeared him to fans of jam bands like Phish and let him expand far beyond the bluegrass world where he started.

Last month Mr. Strings released a new album, “Me/And/Dad,” on which he and his stepfather, guitarist Terry Barber, play 14 traditional bluegrass and country songs backed by an all-star Nashville band. It’s a change of pace from Mr. Strings’s original music, which tends to begin and end with standard bluegrass forms but features solo sections where the music might veer in any direction.

A year later, he was in an antique store and saw a guitar hanging on the wall calling out his name. “It seemed like there was a light shining down on it from heaven,” says Mr. Strings. “I needed that guitar.” When Mr. Barber said he couldn’t afford it, young Billy threw a classic four-year-old tantrum. The kindly store owner asked how much Mr. Barber could spend. He replied, “I got 30 bucks to my name” and she said that would do.
