Bill TaylorBill Taylor stands 6-foot-3, but he’s never taller than when a big storm’s approaching and it’s all-hands-on-deck in the KENS 5 studio. That’s when the otherwise wild-and-wacky, up-for-anything TV personality displays the kind of gravitas needed for weather that’s become a matter of life and death.
While TV news people often come and go without so much as a fare-thee-well, a few become local icons. After the recent retirement and dismissal of several high-profile personalities, among them Joe Reinagel, Jeff Brady, Leslie Mouton, Delaine Mathieu and Randy Beamer, few enjoy the kind of respect and admiration that Taylor does.
With limited options, he decided to follow his mother and stepfather to Lake Charles, Louisiana, in 1986. It was such an unexpected move a cousin once asked if they even got “Seinfeld” in Louisiana. TV beckoned, so as graduation approached, Taylor applied for a weekend weather job at the NBC affiliate in Lake Charles. He didn’t have a “reel,” TV lingo for a video containing on-air clips, so he did a 3-minute audition instead. He was offered the job the next day.
While in Montgomery, he also married his wife, Jamie, whom he’d met in Lake Charles. Today they have three daughters, Carissa, 23, Kendall, 20, and Peyton, 16.
