Frank Pallone Jr. joined other congressional Democratic leaders Thursday in announcing new legislation that would increase government oversight of the oil industry.
But some Americans blame President Joe Biden, not the Ukraine war or COVID for the rise in prices. In areleased last month, 41% blamed the administration’s economic policies, 24% blamed the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 24% blamed the oil companies, and just 5% blamed the economy reopening following the pandemic.
And Frank Macchiarola, senior vice president of policy, economics and regulatory affairs for the American Petroleum Institute, said that numerous federal and state investigations going back a decade repeatedly have found that gas price hikes are due to the marketplace, not illegal behavior. “We wouldn’t be here if the oil companies were using it to make the American consumers’ price cheaper.” said Schumer, D-N.Ysuspending the federal gas tax
