Biden’s social media power isn’t the problem we need to solve | Opinion
Twitter has held itself out to be a town square. There is no town square anywhere in this world like Twitter that a sane person would visit. Now, Twitter may fall victim to its own indifference to how terrible it is. Meta’s new Threads app is spreading at a shocking rate.
The most powerful tool in ensuring that information is factual and free from false and damaging claims is our system of civil courts. Publishers who are accountable for what they promote and disseminate, within the broad bounds of First Amendment protections, tend to deliver information that people in a democracy can rely on.
But social media companies don’t have to operate with any guardrails. Now, you have a federal judge making a dubious ruling that the federal government cannot alert the biggest information providers in the world that the stuff on their platforms could be a disinformation campaign from a foreign power. That’s compounding the danger that social media creates. It’s not that we trust government to avoid using its heavy hand to control the media.
But until Congress has the gumption to actually face the real problem — our lax regulatory environment for social media companies — you can expect more struggles over whose information is favored and whose isn’t.
