Americans must unite in opposition to 'political violence and voter intimidation,' President Joe Biden says, as he warns of a rise in Republican extremism ahead of next week's midterm elections
Pointing to attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband, Biden says Trump's false claims about a stolen election have"fuelled the dangerous rise of political violence."
American democracy is under attack because defeated ex-president Donald Trump refused to accept the results of the 2020 election, Biden said on Wednesday in his speech in Washington. Pointing in particular to the attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband, he said that Trump's false claims about a stolen election have "fuelled the dangerous rise of political violence and voter intimidation over the past two years."
"That is the path to chaos in America," he said. "It's unprecedented. It's unlawful. And, it is un-American.The 79-year-old Biden took aim squarely at Republicans who have cast their lot with former president Trump and deny his 2020 election victory.
