Gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke visited a Houston women’s clinic Thursday — the day Texas’ “trigger ban” took effect — to denounce the governor’s role in outlawing nearly all abortions and encourage like-minded voters to come to the polls.

“I can’t believe that after everything we’ve gone through, we’re now being told how to practice medicine. That’s not the ‘hero’s welcome’ that I was given in 2020 ,” said Dr. Lee Bar-Eli, a family physician in Houston, at O’Rourke’s impassioned news conference at the Houston Women’s Reproductive Services clinic in the Washington/Memorial Park area.DECIPHERING DOBBS:The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in June to overturn Roe v.

On Thursday, O’Rourke invited a number of patients and medical professionals to describe their experiences under the new law. Others who have life-threatening miscarriages through fever, infection or bleeding could be forced to wait while doctors consider the risks and implications of carrying out an abortion, medical experts have said.

Another woman, Lesli-Elsie Simms, pointed out that Black people like herself already are three times more likely to die during childbirth than white people, and that the abortion ban will fall hardest on people of color and people who cannot afford to travel out of state for the procedure.
