We spoke to the great bearmccreary about how he composed Halbrand's theme in RingsofPower, how he balances the Galadriel & Elrond he knows from LordoftheRings with their PrimeVideo prequel versions, and more:
There's still plenty of time to go before The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 makes its way to Prime Video, but fans of the J.R.R. Tolkien-inspired series still have much to dissect about season 1. The Lord of the Rings prequel series has already opened the door to Sauron's return after hiding him in plain sight, and its heroine Galadriel has been exposed to some of the darkness within herself as she fights to rid Middle-earth of his evils.
But with Rings of Power, it was challenging because I felt like I knew who Galadriel and Elrond are, and to a much lesser degree, Sauron. These are just lodged in my brain as characters, both from the books and from Peter Jackson's films. I ultimately found with them that I really needed to take a further step away from my preconceived notions. For Elrond, in particular.
You mentioned Sauron, but we meet him as Halbrand first. We, as in me, are shipping him with Galadriel, but he's obviously Sauron. How do you handle that from the start and not give that away in the music? I do like to craft music that works on a visceral, immediate level. And for those who want to go back, if they are inspired by what I did, then I can show them the tools and techniques that I used to create that music. I didn't just make Halbrand's theme Sauron's theme backward to be clever. I did it because it helped me understand what those two relationships would be. I knew there was going to be a point in the last episode where I can pay that off so, in a way, everybody wins.
You've also worked on several projects that had a lot of longevity, most significantly The Walking Dead, but also Outlander. As a show goes on, or as a project continues, how does your relationship to the music or to its characters change?
