The passenger, who was on a date with the driver, was hospitalized with serious injuries.
According to investigators, the man, a San Jose resident, was driving at “high speed” when the car entered the railroad trestle’s west end. When first responders arrived at the San Lorenzo River Railroad Bridge early Sunday morning, they discovered an upside-down red Prius on the beach below.
The unidentified woman in the car was airlifted to a trauma center and treated for serious injuries, while the man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence causing bodily injury. He reportedly told police that the two of them were going home after spending that Saturday at the beach.
