A tree that once produced sweet, juicy pears is now putting out furry fruit that doesn’t taste as good. Is a cross-pollination problem or a rootstock issue?
Trees only pollinate with trees of the same species, so a pear tree can be pollinated by another pear tree — something that is recommended for a better, more bountiful crop — but it can’t be pollinated by any other fruit or nut tree.
Quince is a common rootstock for pears, but under some conditions, it can overtake the graft and become the dominant species. This happens if the graft becomes weakened, gets accidentally prune off, or suckers growing from the rootstock below where the graft was made, are pruned away.
