Boerne Champion will have to wait until Saturday afternoon to find out its Region IV-5A semifinal opponent, as Corpus Christi Ray and Corpus Christi Carroll split the first two games of their best-of-three series. Game 3 is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Cabaniss Baseball Field. Down 5-0 before ever stepping to the plate, the Rangers — the 26-5A runners-up — did their best to get back into the game. Smithson Valley got single runs in each of the first four innings — including solo homers from Ethan Gonzalez and Jackson Elizondo in back-to-back innings — to close to within 5-4.
“ came in and threw strikes for us,” said Woodchick, whose squad has won nine straight games and 10 of its last 11. “He was throwing his slider for a strike and really hitting his spots tonight.”
