Activists launched a petition urging San Diego Air Pollution Control District to order business to correct problem
Barrio Logan residents want county air quality regulators to put an end to odors coming from a local biodiesel plant they said are making them sick.
New Leaf Biofuel, which opened on Newton Avenue near Main Street about 15 years ago, is an industrial business that runs 24/7 converting used cooking oil from restaurants into biodiesel.“Biodiesel directly displaces diesel fuel usage, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 — allowing us all to breathe a little easier,” reads its website.
“On the weekends, I go see my mother in Rosarito, and that’s when I feel I breathe the best air because I can’t be at home,” said Maria Luisa Navarro, a 69-year-old woman who moved into the Senior Villas four years ago.
