A new report indicates Barbie will only be the start of Mattel's upcoming film slate, with 45 movies in development based on their many toy brands.
Barbie is seemingly just the beginning for Mattel, who has 45 movies in development based on their many toys. The Barbie movie stars Margot Robbie as Barbie, who leaves Barbie Land to go on a journey of self-discovery in the real world. Despite not coming out until July 21, Barbie is already gaining attention on social media, signaling the film will be a success.
Now, The New Yorker reports that, because of the positive responses to the upcoming Barbie movie online, Mattel has 45 films in development based on their many toy brands. Of these 45, only 13 have been publicly announced, including Daniel Kaluuya's Barney the Dinosaur and a Hot Wheels film with J.J. Abrams attached. While Barbie has yet to hit theaters, it seems Mattel is gearing up to make all their toys into film experiences.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Is Mattel Setting Up A Cinematic Universe? Other announced films based on Mattel toys include American Girl, Magic 8 Ball, Major Matt Mason, Matchbox, Masters of the Universe, Polly Pocket, Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, Uno, and View-Master. While the films will have different production companies involved, Mattel's in-house Mattel Films will be leading all of them.
Because all the movies will be produced by Mattel Films, it opens the door for a possible cinematic universe made up of movies based on toy brands. This could make each individual film based on a Mattel product more successful, as viewers would want to see the shared universe story each film adds to. However, with 45 films seemingly based on different toys in development, the sheer amount of content might be overwhelming to fit in a single universe.
However, that doesn't mean Mattel couldn't make references between each film that are little nods to their other work. If every movie Mattel is planning to make has as much effort put into it as Barbie, then they could become a successful film company alongside making popular toys. However, their success will have to be decided by Barbie's box office performance, which could decide the fate of the dozens of films they have in development.
