Mayfield, who had four tumultuous seasons in Cleveland, had reached his breaking point by the time the Browns boarded one of the Haslam’s private jets Tuesday for Houston to try to land Watson.
After Watson called the Browns on Thursday to eliminate them from the trade sweepstakes, Mayfield’s agent, Tom Mills, asked the Browns to trade their No. 1 overall pick in 2018.
