San Diego State replaces canceled New Mexico State game with nonconference contest against Mid-American Conference team coming off 10-4 season

SDSU’s contract with New Mexico State called for a $1.5 million penalty payment if one of the schools canceled the game. The Aggies are joining Conference USA this season after being an independent the past five years, and the move left them with too many games on the schedule. It was the first shutout in 156 games for SDSU, dating back to the 2006 season when TCU beat the Aztecs 52-0. It was the worst bowl loss in the school’s Division I history, surpassing a 23-6 defeat to BYU in the 2012 Poinsettia Bowl. And it completed a 7-6 season for SDSU that began with six wins in seven games and ended with four straight losses.
Ohio is coming off a 10-4 season capped with a 30-27 overtime victory against Wyoming in the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl.
