San Diego State strands 11 runners, commits pair of errors but gets clutch hits and stellar pitching on the way to the biggest win to date in program history

San Diego State advanced to the biggest stage in program history behind a practically unheard-of run of stellar pitching, solid defense and clutch hits. But by the one that really matters — wins and losses — it was a resounding success.SDSU overcame two key errors and 11 stranded runners to outlast No. 15 Utah 4-3 in Salt Lake City, marking the biggest softball victory in a spring filled with them.

The Aztecs have a massive advantage moving forward. Per ESPN, 81 percent of the teams that win Game 1 of the best-of-three series have advanced to Oklahoma City. Left-hander Dee Dee Hernandez worked three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to make a winner out of SDSU starter Allie Light. Light, a right-hander, allowed three runs — one of them earned — on two hits while striking out two and walking none.

Hernandez was at her best in the seventh inning. She struck out Karlie Davison looking and, following a one-out single, struck out Haley Denning swinging and got a flyout from Lendall Lundberg to end the game. FINAL out from a 4-3 win at Utah in the first game of the NCAA Salt Lake City Regional! SDSU needs one more win to make its first Women's College World Series!
