Ayala: José Esquivel, one of the earliest members of the Con Safo art collective, is dead
Like Esquivel, many of the veterans of the Con Safo movement became maestros, their work acquired by museums and held in private and corporate collections.Esquivel might have been Con Safo’s most humble and generous member, mentoring dozens of younger Chicano artists, taking the time to talk with them about their work.He began to draw as soon as he could hold a pencil. He won numerous art contests and awards while at Fox Tech High School.
Esquivel stayed and worked. He was invited to study at the Warren Hunter School of Art, a private school long ago shuttered. “My father won a scholarship. Dad graduated in the late ‘50s or early ‘60s.” Martinez also called Esquivel an archaeologist, “unearthing the reality of the barrio in all its shapes and forms.”
