Projections show that Austria’s liberal president is on course to win a second six-year term in an election without the need for a runoff vote.

Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen looks on after casting his vote for the Austrian Presidential election in Vienna, Austria, Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022. Austria's liberal president is hoping to be re-elected on Sunday without the need for a runoff vote after a campaign in which he has cast himself as the stable option in uncertain times.

Campaign posters for the 78-year-old Van der Bellen, who hails from the environmentalist Green party but ran as an independent, featured the slogan “The Safe Choice in Stormy Times.” Van der Bellen said that, with pre-election polls giving him a big lead, he had worried that people wouldn't turn out to vote.

“I hope there will be a kind of closing of ranks of the constructive forces in this republic so that we can tackle these problems together,” he said.
