Steppenwolf Theatre Company has announced that actor Austin Pendleton, 83, has dropped out of his leading role as Spooner in the theater’s upcoming production of the Harold Pinter play “No Man’s Land,” which also stars Steppenwolf co-founder Jeff Perry. A spokesman for the theater cited personal reasons.
Ensemble member Pendleton is a revered figure in the American theater, whose six-decade career includes appearing as Motel the tailor in the original Broadway production of “Fiddler in the Roof.” He has continued to work into his 80s, mostly as a director. He appeared in the cast of Tracy Letts’ “The Minutes” on Broadway in 2022 and last fall directed a widely acclaimed Broadway production of “Between Riverside and Crazy.
