The University of Alabama once held a massive lead in in-state students, but that has changed dramatically over the last decade.
. That’s about 1,100 more in-state undergrads than Alabama had enrolled in 2021, and that gap is growing. A shift to out-of-state recruitment has caused UA’s in-state, undergraduate enrollment to decline from nearly 17,000 students in 2010 to a low of just over 13,000 in 2019.
UA’s in-state undergraduate enrollment dropped every year during that span, before reversing course in 2020. It again increased in 2021, but only by 85 students. For comparison, Auburn increased its in-state enrollment by 213 students from 2020 to 2021. Between the two universities, Auburn was the more popular choice for students from 39 of Alabama’s 67 counties, or nearly 60% of counties. That number has completely flipped over the last decade. Use the animated map below to see how trends at the county level have shifted.Back in 2010, the University of Alabama was the school that held a 39-to-28 county lead. Since then, Auburn has rolled over the state like a, well, navy blue tide, surging westward.
Alabama has regained a couple of counties in the last few years, notably a swath of counties stretching east along the I-20 corridor from Birmingham to the Georgia state line. But Auburn’s lead remains strong. You can see the number of students enrolled in either school from each Alabama county in the map below.
