The Athletics will have 14 pitchers and 14 position players on the roster when they open their season Friday against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
Oakland will also carry three catchers, a rarity in MLB but something that can be afforded given the expanded 28-man rosters for the month of April. Sean Murphy will be the primary starter behind the plate, with Austin Allen and Stephen Vogt serving as backups.
Additionally, the A's placed pitcher James Kaprielian on the 10-day injured list with an inflamed right AC joint and put right-handed pitchers Deolis Guerra and Brent Honeywell on the 60-day injured list. Reliever Sam Selman was designated for assignment. Outfielder Ramón Laureano remains on the suspended list, and needs to serve 27 more games before he can return to the club.
