Washington Nationals' Yadiel Hernandez rounds the bases on his three-run home run during the third inning of a baseball game against the Houston Astros, Saturday, May 14, 2022, in Washington. WASHINGTON — It could not last forever. Baseball is not as effortless as the Astros have made it appear across this marvelous stretch of May. They pitched at a level few franchises can even fathom. Their offense never erupted, but executed when games hung in the balance.
Starter Cristian Javier imploded and could not finish the fourth inning. Four relievers teamed to yield six runs after he exited. Javier should have had an advantage before throwing a pitch. Houston’s haphazard lineup could not give him one. The baseball exited his bat at 104.7 mph. It flew past Fedde on the pitcher's mound and into Washington’s defensive shift. Shortstop Dee Strange-Gordon fielded it and turned a double play, preventing Houston from opening the floodgates for their starter.
