ANAHEIM, Calif. — Dusty Baker stayed committed to resting his regulars, even if one move required a midnight epiphany.
Baker sat left fielder Michael Brantley and second baseman Jose Altuve for Sunday’s series finale against the Angels while reiterating the problems a truncated spring training caused. The manager gave“You don’t want to risk these games, but you certainly don’t want to risk the health of my players and they never get into game shape or game ready,” Baker said. “The younger players, they get ready quicker. Usually in spring training they get ready in a couple weeks.
Baker always planned to give Brantley a day off Sunday. Sitting Altuve arrived as a “middle of the night thought,” Baker said. Altuve struck out five times in the first three games of this season-opening series. He is 1-for-12, with a solo home run as his only hit. Altuve took 23 at-bats in Grapefruit League play and finished just one nine-inning game. As a result, Baker did not want to play him four days in a row. Houston has a scheduled off day on Monday and another on Thursday.
“Whether we like it or not, I’ve said it repeatedly that we’re still in spring training,” Baker said.
