The Astros outfielder is improving and close to a return.

Two days after he dislocated his right pinky finger, Astros outfielder Chas McCormick resumed baseball activities on Friday and said the injury was improving.McCormick drew a leadoff walk and was hurt diving back to first base on a pickoff attemptMcCormick did not start in Friday’s series opener against the Orioles, but said imaging taken of his finger came back negative for fractures and was hopeful for a return on the horizon.

“I've dislocated this pinky a lot,” McCormick said. “So it's kind of easy for this one to pop out. It's already crooked. But yeah, so it looked broken, but I knew I just dislocated it. So I was like OK, I'll only be out for a couple days.” The primary concern is alleviating the swelling in McCormick’s finger and making sure he can squeeze his hand into a fist. Before the game on Friday, McCormick took some dry swings and did fielding work, both activities designed to test range of motion in his hand.

Although Astros manager Dusty Baker said McCormick could theoretically be available off the bench as a pinch runner against the Orioles, both men were unsure whether McCormick would be able to stay in the game and play defense.
