Arrowhead is located in Perry County, near Uniontown, in the heart of Alabama’s Black Belt region, one of the poorest areas in the country.

Crews compact municipal solid waste at the Arrowhead Landfill near Uniontown, Ala. The owners of one of Alabama’s largest landfills agreed to pay $30,600 to settle alleged violations of their operating permit with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.

ADEM inspectors also noted a leachate seep at the landfill that allowed liquid waste from the disposal area to enter a drainage ditch. In the settlement agreement, the landfill’s owners responded by saying that “unique circumstances” occurred prior to the alleged violations being reported, including equipment failure, “unusual and intense” storms, and the construction of a new disposal cell at the landfill that required some waste to be relocated.

As part of the settlement, the landfill owners proposed paying to have the dirt road that leads to the landfill paved, reducing the amount of dust generated by trucks going in and out of the landfill, a frequent complaint of nearby residents. Every $1.50 spent paving the road would count for $1 towards the penalty, potentially reducing it to a minimum of $7,500.
