A town in Arkansas made so much money from writing speeding tickets that the police are banned from writing anymore for a year. Find out how it happened.
, an audit of the town's finances revealed that over half of its revenue came from speeding tickets. Considering Menifee has a population of approximately 300 people, those numbers seemed a bit off.
The reason why this is a problem goes back to an Arkansas state law which states that no more than 30% of a city's revenue can come from traffic citations. According to Tatum, Menifee was well over that threshold. The audit revealed that the small town had racked up over $120,000 from speeding tickets alone.
"When I hired him, I said, 'We can't write tickets 10 miles and under,'" Said mayor Green."But yet these guys was writing tickets 10 miles and under. Because to me, he's [police chief Randall] incompetent." However, one official did step up to take responsibility. In a message to THV11 Menifee City alderman Derrick Hammond stated,"Chief Randall was given permission from the mayor and city council to go after past due and unpaid tickets. The tickets were written by officers who no longer work for the city."
