The move to censure state Rep. Stephanie Stahl Hamilton came after efforts to expel her from the legislature failed.
State Rep. Stephanie Stahl Hamilton, a Democrat from Tucson, was censured Tuesday for hiding Bibles in a lounge for legislators under furniture cushions and in a nearby refrigerator as a comment about the separation of church and state and the weaponization of religion in politics. PHOENIX, Arizona — Arizona lawmakers censured a Democratic member of the state legislature Tuesday after she admitted that he had been hiding two Bibles in a lounge at the state Capitol.
. The censure was approved by only two votes, 30-28. An expulsion requires approval from two-thirds of the House members.the Bibles in the legislators-only lounge first disappeared on March 23. Security workers found the Bibles under some couch cushions. “I hold Scripture very dear to my heart,” Stahl Hamilton said in an apology on April 26, the Post reports. “… I have the utmost respect for people of all faiths and for people who choose not to have a faith. And because of that respect, I recognize my actions could have been seen something as less than playful and offensive.”
But Republican David Cook voted against the expulsion measure, calling it “overkill,” the Republic reports.
