President Joe Biden’s new policies have shuffled the nationalities seen and frequent crossing points used by migrants along the Arizona-Mexico border.

President Joe Biden unveiled new steps aimed at stemming historic migration as he plans to visit El Paso, Texas.President Joe Biden’s new immigration policies have shifted the nationalities and the popular crossing points used by migrants along the Arizona-Mexico border.

The Biden administration has touted the new policies, which they claim have led to a sharp decrease in migrant encounters in January compared with December. The number of encounters with migrants from these countries also has fallen significantly since the programs were announced. It’s clear that U.S. immigration policies affect migratory flows, although how direct those impacts are is up for debate, Miller said. The trend of hundreds of people presenting themselves daily near the Cocopah Reservation near Yuma was first caused by Title 42, Miller said.that allows border officials to rapidly expel migrants at the nation’s borders. Under the restriction, ports of entry were closed to asylum seekers, which forced many to seek asylum between official crossings.

Quiroz said he only encounters about 30% of the migrants he used to see while conducting his humanitarian work. He only interacts with about 40-150 migrants per day, and some days even fewer, he said. In Arizona, the number of migrants encountered from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela fell drastically, to 1,956 encounters in January from 14,898 encounters in December, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data.

“The significant decrease in Border Patrol encounters, well beyond that which is expected based on seasonal trends, is indicative of the success of the measures announced by the Administration,” according to a CBP news release.
