Butler has also said that he has spent decades mulling over Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s poem “I Am Waiting,” from the best-selling 1958 collection “A Coney Island of the Mind.” Butler borrows the phrase “Age of Anxiety” from one of the poem’s stanzas , using it to title two tracks on “WE.
Before his death last year, at a hundred and one, Ferlinghetti was filmed reading his poem “The World Is a Beautiful Place” in a back office at City Lights, the bookstore and publishing house he co-founded in San Francisco in 1953. Ferlinghetti’s slight, singsongy cadence gives the poem a playful saunter. He writes of life’s thrills and their inevitable interruption . Arcade Fire is also interested in how momentary and evanescent our lives are, and in what we can do before we die.
