The British startup plans to expand its on-the-job training plans in the United States after more than doubling the number of apprentices it works over the last year to 8,800.

Multiverse's Euan Blair and Jeremy Duggan have raised $220 million in a Series D to help solve tech's talent shortfall with apprenticeships.“Education, Education, Education” was a key mantra for former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. His eldest son Euan Blair has taken that message to heart raising $220 million to expand his education startup Multiverse which uses apprenticeships to help people land a tech job without a college degree.

Multiverse plans to expand further in the U.S., and broaden its courses, with the Series D funding round that was co-led by StepStone Group, and returning investors Lightspeed Venture Partners and General Catalyst, which values the company at $1.7 billion. The growth of the British education startup comes after President Joe Biden committed $113 million in May to overhaul the U.S.

Multiverse, which rebranded from WhiteHat last year, claims that 56% of its graduates are people of color, and more than half are women. That could come as a boon for Silicon Valley which despite ambitious pledges to address hiring discrimination against Black applicants following the murder of George Floyd in 2020, and a decades-long campaign to address a lack of diversity, have made slow progress at building teams that resemble the American workforce.
