A new report points to a display that will cost much more to make—and raise the price of the next Apple Watch Ultra.
“MicroLED is supposed to bring benefits in terms of power efficiency and brightness, but it remains to be seen how these will be improved in real usage. In addition, OLEDs continue to narrow the efficiency gap with MicroLEDs with tandem stacks, phosphorescent blue emitters, polarizer free OLEDs all contributing to large gains. In addition, it isn’t clear if MicroLEDs can maintain an efficiency advantage as die sizes shrink which will be necessary to bring costs down.
If Apple does introduce this new tech, it will start manufacturing them next year, but release the product in 2025, the report says. That chimes with some other reports, which have hinted at a Spring 2025 release for the Watch Ultra 2, though it would put the Watch release schedule out of kilter with other Watches which, apart from the very first one, have all launched in the fall, even when multiple models have been released at the same time.
Additionally, Apple rarely uses a design just once, so if the report is right, I would expect there to be at least one update to the Ultra before a 2025 model with a bigger display and the different design that would entail.The report adds, “The 2.1” display is expected to have a resolution of around 325 PPI, significantly less than what we see in smartphones, but consistent with the current Apple Watch Ultra.
