The full-size HomePod reaches its second-generation model. Is it better? Or is the HomePod mini still enough?
The new HomePod is a little shorter than its forbear, but the same width and the overall design is similar: a squat cylinder with a touchscreen top. That screen is now edge-to-edge: on the first-gen model it illuminated in the center but not at the edges. And the plus and minus signs that let you adjust the volume with a tap are now engraved and permanent, as they are on the HomePod mini.
The power cable is improved: it’s now easily removable. If, like me, you took the power cable out of the original HomePod and then saw Apple’s advice that this should never be done, you might be glad to know that this time around, you can. It’s a proper electrical cable which slides in and out comfortably. Please note that the power cable only goes in one way round: look for the extra channel on one side.
In other words, where speakers from some companies put smart first and speaker second, the HomePod was designed the other way round. Apple says this one sounds even better. Unlike the first HomePod, there’s compatibility with Spatial Audio now, and this is great, an all-encompassing sound that really works well, offering a seamless, immersive effect.
