'You can tell how afraid Democrats are of Gov. RonDeSantis by their constant need to lie about him.' -conncarroll

Last time Vice President Kamala Harris talked about DeSantis, she falsely claimed the Florida governor had banned teaching about slavery and its aftermath in Florida schools. It appears Harris is now willing to admit slavery is taught in Florida schools, but she is newly claiming that DeSantis wants to teach Florida students that slavery was beneficial to black people.

This is just completely untrue. Here is a link to the Florida history standards. It is 216 pages. Here is the one sentence Harris is using to justify her claim: “Instruction includes how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.” Clearly the standards do not, as Harris claims, teach that enslaved people benefited from slavery. What it does teach is that some slaves were taught skilled trades which they could then use to help themselves.

As Florida’s African American History Standards Workgroup explains: “The intent of this particular benchmark clarification is to show that some slaves developed highly specialized trades from which they benefited. This is factual and well documented.

Read the whole document. No honest person that reads this document will conclude that slavery benefited African Americans.
