This will not be your father's Groundhog Day snowstorm. Eleven years after a blizzard raged in Chicago we are expecting another winter weather event on Groundhog Day but with different characteristics.
. A blizzard blasted the area laying down 21.2" of snow at O'Hare between January 31st and February 2nd of 2011. It ranks as the 3rd worst snowfall in Chicago's history. A jackknifed bus stopped traffic on Lake Shore Drive during the height of the storm stranding several people in their vehicles that were backed up behind it.
Winds gusted up to 70 mph along the lakefront whipping up the heavy snow that accumulated during the blizzard. Most of the Chicago area received between 18" to nearly two feet of snow.
