Animal populations have plummeted by nearly 70% in last 50 years, a new report says. 'Humans use as many ecological resources as if we lived on almost two Earths,' the report said. Now, the planet is facing a 'code red' situation.

Now, two years later, authors of the report say the continued decline is a"code red for the planet " as some scientists warn that Earth is heading toward "The message is clear and the lights are flashing red.

The World Wildlife Fund for Nature's Living Planet Index — which tracks populations of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians — found an average 69% decrease in monitored wildlife populations since 1970. Freshwater populations have been the hardest hit, with an average decline of 83%, the report found, with habitat loss and migration route barriers accounting for roughly half the threats they face.

Most of the biodiversity loss is seen in South America, which has lost 94% of its biodiversity, according to the report. The Amazon has been rapidly depleted over the years, and the report says"we are rapidly approaching a tipping point" where the tropical rainforest"will no longer function." Much of the loss is due to humans. Land use – deforestation, agrochemicals and pollution – is the biggest threat to nature, the report says, with human consumption, technology and poor environmental governance also playing a significant role.

NEW REPORT: According to the 2022 Living Planet Report we’ve seen an average 69% decrease in monitored wildlife populations since 1970. Read more:
