David Boreanaz talks about the possibility of an Angel reboot. 'I don't look in the past and I don't look down the line because no one's guaranteed tomorrow.'
Angel star David Boreanaz opens up about why a reboot would be unlikely. As the brooding vampire with a soul, Boreanaz was a core part of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The actor's chemistry with Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played the titular slayer, and the star-crossed romance between their characters fueled the show's early success and ultimately opened the door for Boreanaz to lead his own spinoff: Angel, which debuted in 1999 and ran for five seasons.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Since then, Boreanaz has remained a consistent presence on the small screen and he's garnered a slew of fans that recognize him from a variety of other roles. He's played Seeley Booth on the Fox procedural Bones, led the long-running series SEAL Team, and even parodied himself on Family Guy. It's the kind of longevity that's difficult to achieve, particularly for performers that land a career-defining character early on in their runs.
I always maintain that I'm always in the now. And for me, it's really about this show right now and the success that it can have on Paramount+. So I'm busy just working in the now. And I've prescribed that because for the amount of work that I've done and been blessed to be on so many different types of shows, from Buffy to Angel to Bones, and the run that Bones had for 12 seasons, you really have to maintain where you are presently.
Why It's Best To Leave Angel In The Past Since it concluded in 2003, there have been two attempts to directly revive Buffy. The first, a sort of reboot feature film, which was rumored to have Vanessa Hudgens as a lead star, went nowhere. More recently, a television reboot that would have existed in the same universe as the original Buffy was similarly given a disappointing update.
Similar to Seinfeld and Friends, though different in genre, Buffy not only helped to define the 1990s, it is one of the most iconic series of all time. That's not an excuse to never attempt an update, but it is an acknowledgment of how difficult it would be to get it right. The cast of Friends has repeatedly declined a reboot. Seinfeld, more than once, in more than one way, has mocked the very idea. For its part, any attempt to revive the Buffy franchise after Angel has fallen flat.
