The Anchorage Audubon Society is giving away 10,000 white spruce seedlings over the next two weekends in an attempt to replace some of the trees lost to spruce beetle kill.

Charles Utermohle, center, prepares white spruce seedlings for distribution at Westchester Lagoon in Anchorage on Thursday. 10,000 white spruce seedlings over the next two weekends in an attempt to replace some of the trees lost to spruce beetle kill in recent years.

The seedlings, which come from a nursery in Minnesota, were frozen and dormant over the winter and shipped to Alaska in cold storage. The seedlings are not bare root, but they have a small amount of soil attached to the root plug. That means they must be planted as soon as possible after they are picked up, organizers say. They said the seedlings have a window of about one week from arrival until they have to be watered or cared for.
