The problem is that truly great teams impose their will no matter the conditions. If they can't throw, they'll find a way to run it down their opponent's throat. Knowing that Ohio State's pass game was neutered, Northwestern put extra defenders near the line of scrimmage. That can sufficiently explain why the Buckeyes had trouble breaking long runs. It does not excuse them from not getting enough push at the line of scrimmage to convert third- and fourth-and-1.
But Stroud should not be the answer to the Buckeyes' running problems. They need to be more effective in their normal run game, especially in crucial short-yardage situations.Ohio State converted only 4 of 15 third downs. Northwestern converted 9 of 20. The Wildcats used direct snaps and more creativity generally to find gaps in Ohio State's defense.
