'Potentially hazardous,' skyscraper-sized asteroid passing close to Earth
This undated photo captured by the Hubble Space Telescope and made available by NASA in March 2019 shows the asteroid Gault that gradually self-destructing. It was spinning so fast, dusty material ejected from the surface formed two long, thin, comet-like tails. The longer tail stretched more than 500,000 miles and was roughly 3,000 miles wide. The shorter tail is about a quarter as long. The streamers will eventually disperse into space.
Asteroid 1994 XD will get as close as 1.9 million miles from Earth, or eight times the distance between the Earth and the moon, before 8 p.m. June 12, space experts said. The asteroid is listed by NASA as"potentially hazardous" for being within the minimum distance between Earth and sun. And although considered a relatively small asteroid, it is as big as the Empire State Building at 1,500 feet.
