Story said her eighth-grade son, who was pushed into Eastside Elementary after his middle school closed last summer, complains of being cramped in a school that hasn’t fully adjusted to the influx of older students.
The court made clear that a final site must not pose an additional burden to Black students, and would need to be approved by a judge. But as the district continued to narrow its options, it became clearer to LaFayette residents that their offer for a school located in the county seat would not be chosen.
Like many others in LaFayette, Ellis said he would favor consolidation if it truly meant more opportunities for local students. But he didn’t want progress to come at the expense of his city, which had struggled for years to attract and retain businesses and homeowners.“We’re just hoping that we put ourselves in a position to give them the land,” he said. “Hopefully what we’ve done is going to be enough.
