$1.27 million is the magic number for retirement, Americans say. The average person has just 7% of that saved.
Over 2,700 Americans were surveyed for Northwestern Mutual's annualabout their feelings on the state of the economy and how their retirement planning is going.
While they're all small percentages, older groups tend to be closer to their targets on average, as seen in the above table. Experts havethat it can be discouraging to be behind your savings goals, but there are options to get back on track like taking on more risky long-term assets and making an effort to not take from your retirement savings unless absolutely necessary.
