A frustratingly often unfunny comedy that has a strong message.
Editor Jay Cassidy can make a scene gripping or cut randomly to make Russell’s ridiculously complicated story even more confusing. Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki creates many creative close-ups and beautiful wide shots. I am not a fan of the handheld appearing camera movements that shake around. Amsterdam looks best when the camera is still or moving smoothly with a professional look and not the shakier framed shots.
Alessandro Nivola’s insecure and suspicious Detective Hiltz and Matthias Schoenaerts’ trusting veteran Detective Lem Getwiller are a fun pair opposite Bale. Andrea Riseborough is gorgeous as Bale’s manipulative wife Beatrice Vandenheuvel. She lets the audience know immediately she has ulterior motives and does not truly love Burt. She looks stunning in Amsterdam and gives one of the best performances in the film.
Ed Begley Jr. is very weirdly flat when he delivers lines that are supposed to be emotional as the main trio’s old army leader Bill Meekins. We never care about their relationship to him because we’re only told he was so nice and a great leader in the brief flashbacks. Colleen Camp gets a forgettable cameo as Eva Ott that’s not that funny, sadly. Leland Orser gets a short and effective cameo, but even he gets lost in the muck and chaos of the finale.
