High energy density batteries could potentially outperform lithium-ion batteries

, could enable electric vehicles to run longer on a single charge and would be cheaper to manufacture, while having a positive impact on the environment.

When used in a conventional lithium-ion battery, aluminum fractures and fails within a few charge-discharge cycles due to expansion and contraction as lithium travels in and out of the material. Developers concluded that aluminum wasn’t a viable battery material, and the idea was largely abandoned. Researchers have added small amounts of other materials to aluminum to create foils with particular “microstructures,” or arrangements of different materials. The engineers tested more than 100 different materials to understand how they would behave in batteries.

Researchers use AI to find new magnetic materials without critical elementsResearchers use AI to find new magnetic materials without critical elementsA team of scientists from Ames National Laboratory has developed a new machine learning model for discovering critical-element-free permanent magnet materials. The model predicts the Curie temperature of new material combinations. It is an important first step in using artificial intelligence to predict new permanent magnet materials. This model adds to the team's recently developed capability for discovering thermodynamically stable rare earth materials. The work is published in Chemistry of Materials.
