The Angel City FC captain and defender, an L.A. native, plays for host New Zealand because her father is from that country.

Ali Riley had dreams of playing for the U.S. women’s national soccer team, but her path took her to New Zealand.A year later, the Los Angeles native and Harvard-Westlake High grad made her debut with the senior national team in 2007 and also made her first World Cup. In 2008, while in Stanford, she was a member of the Olympic team.

“For New Zealand to go in with Australia and have this very unique first time, a co-hosted World Cup, is really special.” Eventually, the WPS folded, leading Riley to begin her European journey, which included time at Malmo, Rosengard , Chelsea and Bayern Munich before she returned to the U.S. with the Orlando Pride and finally back home with Angel City FC.Riley owes a lot of her journey to her parents.

“To be able to spend time with them, it gives me energy, it gives me that work-life balance that not every player is lucky to have. That’s why I want to grow this league, that’s why I want to grow the game, because I want every player to feel what I’m feeling now.”
