Alex Palou’s dominant run in the past four weeks of the IndyCar schedule continued Sunday as the series' points leader won the Detroit Grand Prix.
After securing his second consecutive pole and his first-ever on an IndyCar street course, the Chip Ganassi Racing driver looked to be on for a comfortable win. But after several late cautions, he had to fight fiercely to hold off defending series champion Will Power. Palou ended up prevailing by 1.1843 seconds over the Team Penske driver to take the checkered flag.
Palou, the 2021 IndyCar champion, has a 51-point lead on his CGR teammate Marcus Ericsson through seven of the season’s 17 races – essentially a full race weekend’s worth of a cushion. With 20 laps to go, Romain Grosjean nicked the apex wall on the inside of Turn 4 and was sent into the outer wall with his left-front corner of the No. 28 car, handing the Andretti Autosport driver his fourth DNF in seven races – all of them coming in the back half of those races, including at St.
It marked the fourth caution of the day, the previous three coming with Callum Ilott driving over the back of Kyle Kirkwood at the start of the race; Pato O’Ward sending it into the Turn 9 wall while attempting to stay on the lead-lap; and Sting Ray Robb running into the Turn 3 runoff in the restart following O’Ward’s crash.Palou was holding a comfortable 6.2-second lead at the time of Grosjean’s crash.
On Lap 96, the field took the green flag for the final time, with Palou getting a far better jump that would preserve his victory, becoming the series’ second multi-race-winner of the year alongside Josef Newgarden.place back from Rossi in Turn 4, leading to a multi-lap battle between the two front-running Arrow McLaren drivers. After multiple shoves and some wheel-banging, Rosenqvist ended up holding onto the final podium position.
