Alex Lasry is planning to drop out of the Wisconsin Senate race before the Democratic primary and support Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes in an effort to unseat Republican Sen. Ron Johnson.
Democrats are consolidating behind Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes as their candidate to take on Republican Sen.Milwaukee Bucks executive Alex Lasry is planning to drop out of the Democratic Senate primary Wednesday afternoon and endorse Barnes, both campaigns told POLITICO.
Lasry is the second Democratic candidate to step aside from the race this week. Tom Nelson, county executive of Outagamie County, suspended his bid two days ago and threw his weight behind Barnes. The only major Democrat remaining in the race, state Treasurer Sarah Godlewski, has been polling in the single digits.“I am so grateful to Alex for all of the work he’s done to move Wisconsin forward, and I’m proud to have his endorsement,” he said.
Lasry, who won early support from labor unions, cast himself as a candidate who could get things done. He received plaudits from Democrats for a television commercial in which he bluntly said, “Here’s an idea: If we make things here in America, supply chain issues won’t be a thing anymore.”in June found Barnes winning 25 percent of the vote, while Lasry captured 21 percent. The margin of error for that poll was plus or minus 6.2 percent.that indicated he was expanding his lead.
Barnes would be the first Black senator of Wisconsin if elected. At 35, he would also be one of the youngest senators currently in the chamber.
